A man failed in his attempt to steal around €2,500 from New Ross Credit Union on Thursday.

The 23-year-old man allegedly reached under the glass protective barrier at the counter and managed to get his hands on €2,500.

“As he attempted to get it out the staff were alerted and they tried to intervene, so the money was recovered and he fled the scene. He fumbled the money,” said Inspector Liam Kavanagh.

The local man was later identified using CCTV and was arrested in New Ross and is before the courts.

All of the money was recovered.

Separately, gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the theft of a bag from the boot of an unlocked vehicle at the SuperValu car park on the same day at 3.20 p.m. A small sum of cash was in the bag, which was found in a bin nearby. A small, skinny man was seen in the area at the time.

Anyone who saw anybody acting suspiciously in the car park that day is asked to contact New Ross Garda Station on 051 426030.

Gardaí are urging people to lock their vehicles following a number of break-ins over recent months.
